To promote and foster appreciation for outstanding Canadian writing and literature among residents and visitors of Nova Scotia's North Shore Communities
To this end, a small volunteer committee of book-lovers living along the North Shore of Nova Scotia--from Pugwash to Pictou-- has been working together with local sponsors and supporters since 2000.
In the year 2000, three visionary women conceived the idea of a local, rural literary festival. With the help of the Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library and a small grant from the provincial government they mounted the inaugural event. The festival was a great hit! Over the next few years Read by the Sea built up its committee and financial base.
Now with between seven and ten committee members, lots of community backing, regular government support, and a committed list of sponsors, the festival has become an established and important part of the local cultural scene, much anticipated by locals and summer visitors alike. Read by the Sea continues to grow, both in the number of participants it attracts to its events and the range of literary opportunities it supports.
In addition to our summer literary festival -- which consists of Centre Stage readings featuring four outstanding Canadian writers and WordPlay, “An Extraordinary Literary Festival for Children of all Ages.” and the popular PageTurners initiative, which supports local book clubs and school libraries, encouraging a well-read audience that is familiar with the books of writers presenting at Read by the Sea each year. We also offer Read by the Sea Presents, a series of occasional readings at a variety of venues.
Read by the Sea has hosted an astonishing array of remarkable writers in the past, and with the generous support of our sponsors and friends, we will continue to do so far into the future. We invite you to join our growing family of supporters and make a meaningful contribution to the cultural life of our community.
