Read by the Sea takes place at the River John Legion Branch 108 and Memorial Gardens, River John, Pictou County, Nova Scotia.

The River John Fire Hall, School St., is the rain location for Read by the Sea.

The village of River John and the communities of the Northumberland Shore offer many delightful diversions for visitors. Please visit the River John website for more information.

Balmoral Grist Mill

On Balmoral Road, off Route 311 or Route 326. A 15 minute drive from River John village. Beautifully restored 19th century working mill. Tours,picnic area. Nearby, off  Route 326, in Denmark, also check out the Sutherland Steam Mill, also part of the Nova Scotia Museum.

Cape John Road 

Just beyond the village over the bridge going east, take a left turn at the gas station.  This scenic 5 km road goes to the end of the Cape (several beaches on this route, plus a fishing wharf at the tip of Cape John).  There’s also Skinner’s Cove about 5 km from River John village, driving further east on Route 6, taking the second paved road to the left then a right, following signs to the fishing wharf and beach.

River John and Area Historical Museum and Kiosk  

Located in the village, crossing the bridge traveling east on Route 6.

Toney River  

A picturesque fishing wharf and white sand beaches nearby. Located off  Route 6, driving east about 15 minutes from River John.

Lavender Farm

A field of lavender, shop with lavender products, tours and U-pick. Located on Route 6, at Seafoam heading east from River John.

Lismore Sheep Farm 

A working sheep farm with Highland cattle and a well stocked on site shop selling sheep skins, yarn, knitting kits, wool blankets and other items. 
Located on Louisville Rd., just off Route 6 (the Sunrise Trail) heading west from River John

Rushton Beach Provincial Park

5km west of River John on the Sunrise Trail (Route 6) – one of several beautiful warm salt water beaches. There’s ample parking, several

picnic tables and change rooms. A long boardwalk from the parking area to the beach crosses a marsh with many species of birds and water fowl.

Sea Kayak Tours

Kayaking off Cape John with a certified guide.

Sugar Moon Farm

Located in Earltown, off Route 311 (about 15 minutes south of River John).  This rustic restaurant, set in a working sugar bush, serves a great maple syrup, pancake and sausage brunch. Well-maintained hiking trails nearby.
